STATEMENT

Art has always been an important means for me to express myself and in some way I have been involved in it my entire life.  Art education was part of my career choice, fulfilling a desire to share my love  of art with others. As a teacher I have encouraged students, ranging from childhood to senior citizens, to express and develop their own talents in the visual arts; at the same time learning from them and developing myself as an artist.

My medium of choice has always been oil, but throughout my life I have ventured into a variety of other media, and have explored both the two and three dimensional.  I derive my most pleasure from the process of painting in the exploration of color and its subtleties.

As I have progressed through my artistic development, I have expanded from a nonobjective abstract focus to what I would refer to as surrealistic. I find I am fascinated with how the individual deals with himself/herself, interpersonal relationships, society, God, and nature.  All of my works are simply glimpses into my feelings, either personal or what I think I have observed in others.

BIOGRAPHY

I am in the sixth decade of a life that began in Stambaugh, Mi in a hospital that no longer exists. That makes me aware of the passage of time of much which has been involved with the teaching or creation of art.
.
My love of art began early in life, though I never had any early formal art education, my parents gave me a great gift: the opportunity to explore this love by supporting me as I majored in art at the college level. I chose to obtain an art education degree from Northern Michigan University.
.
Following graduation, I went to Manitowoc, WI for my first teaching position. I began initial presentation of my work by participating in art fairs and competitions. Eventually, my family and I relocated back to the Upper Peninsula and I was back in Kingsford where I grew up. For the next twelve years, I taught various adult art classes for the community school program. This was followed an art elementary position in Breitung Township Schools until I retired from education.

Throughout my teaching years, I also pursued my own personal involvement creating work in numerous media with oils always remaining my primary focus. I also participated in workshops presented by the University of Minnesota studying under various artists and instructors. During this period I continued to show my work both in fairs and galleries. At present, I am developing a body of work that will be presented this fall at the Center for The Visual Arts in Wausau, WI. My work can also be viewed at Wisconsin Arts, Allouez and the Pedestrian Gallery, Oshkosh.
